Review: There Will Be Blood

The opening frames of Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood dangle precariously in wordlessness, as a gaunt silver prospector does the same down a fatal shaft, hoarding a chunk of treasure, discovering oil and breaking his leg all in the same incredible sequence. Time shuffles its feet, from one side of the 20th century to the other.

Thanks to Daniel Day-Lewis, who plays protagonist Daniel Plainview, and Johnny Greenwood, who usually plays guitar for Radiohead, but here sculpts an astonishingly atypical background score for a period film, these first dozen dialogue-free minutes not just echo Sergio Leone classics, but surpass them.

There Will Be Blood is a masterpiece. Even before the first word is spoken.
