The actor is a guitarist of some note, having appeared on Oasis tracks and being a part of various bands over the years. He's played acoustic guitar in his movies (Chocolat and Once Upon A Time In Mexico), is friends with fellow Hunter S Thompson devotee Marilyn Manson, and notably founded the ad-hoc group P, which featured star bassist Flea, of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. So yeah, he knows his tunes.

But he's never sung before.

And Sondheim, he's the first to admit, was tricky as hell. 'It's real obtuse stuff. When you start to take those pieces apart, melody line by melody line, it's a lot of half-steps, which is not real easy to do,' Depp explained to EW. 'Kind of go G to A-flat to A to B-flat. It's super, ultra-complicated -- these notes that shouldn't work together at times. But he made them so.'
