He's a mean man, this Mr Todd.
'He makes Sid Vicious look like the innocent paper boy,' the ever-quotable Depp told Entertainment Weekly. 'He's beyond dark. He's already dead. He's been dead for years.'
Based on Stephen Sondheim's critically acclaimed musical based on the mythical London legend of a barber who slashed up his clientele and, with the help of a rather awful pastry-chef, fed them to the rest of the city, Sweeney Todd is a grisly, bloody tale indeed -- albeit told with unreal Kill Billistic spurts of orangish blood the colour of marinara sauce.
While Helena Bonham Carter has the meatiest part in the film -- as Mrs Lovett, the aforementioned hideous cook -- and superbly sings the songs with incredibly loyal Sondheim style, Depp interprets the musical his own unique way: par for the course. On various occasions, he has called this interpretation the 'alternative' -- read 'punk' -- Sweeney. Whoa.
