'I was not meant for reality shows'

Kalyanji introduced Javed to his music director son, Viju Shah, who was quite taken in by Javed's talent and promised him a break in his next project.

The first song Javed got to sing was for the film Beti No 1. The film got delayed and when it was released in 2000, Javed's song, Chori Chori Aankh Ladi, went unnoticed.

After that came weeks of no work and the waiting game began. He did his share of meeting music directors and performed in a couple of shows. However, singing in big films continued to elude Javed.

"I started wondering why things are going wrong for me," Javed recalls. "At times, I also asked myself what I am doing in Mumbai with no work and no future as a singer. But I never gave up. I said I would wait and struggle more. Maybe six years was not good enough to struggle."

Why he did not try his luck in reality TV shows? "A lot of people told me to go through that route. But I felt I was not meant for that. I wanted to prove to music directors that I could sing. I never believed in being one of the contestants on those shows," Javed replies.

His big break came when he got the chance to sing in Haasil and Chameli.

"Unfortunately, in both the films, my songs got buried and the other songs were more popular," he chuckles.
