When he moved to China, we gave him authentic traditional Chinese robes -- they call them cheongsam. They have different types for men and women.
Since there is a lot of action in the film and Akshay does the stunts himself, we gave him flowing loose dresses so that they did not come in the way of the cables and harnesses. Multiple zips and long cuts were custom made for the action sequences. But these would not be visible to the audiences. That is the advantage of designing costumes for films -- you can cheat a lot.
We researched Chinese tradition and tried to make their kung-fu outfits in India. But they looked very Indian, the originality was lost.
We have experimented with Akshay's facial hair. In the title song, he wears a long shendi with the Chinese attire, so that brings about a blend of Indian and Chinese looks. He grew a mustache for specific scenes.
