All eyes are trained on Aamir Khan's Ghajini, out for release on December 25. But while Aamir is all out promoting the film, the director A R Murugadoss is relatively low-key.
Yet, Murugadoss, who directed Surya in the Tamil Ghajini, seems very excited about his Bollywood debut.
He talks to Nithya Ramani about directing Perfectionist Khan, and more.
Why are you remaking Ghajini in Hindi?
I had no intention to remake it. The villain in the Tamil Ghajini, Pradeep Singh Rawat (remember Sultan from Sarfarosh?), suggested that the film should be made in Hindi with Aamir Khan. In fact, before I directed the Tamil film, I was discussing it with (the late Tamil director) Jeeva, and he told me that it would make a better Hindi film.
When Pradeep suggested remaking the film with Aamir, I was apprehensive. I knew of Aamir as a soft-hearted and gentle person, who will not suit the tough role.
But I got a call from Aamir appreciating my work and suggesting it to be remade in Hindi. He suggested that Salman Khan would suit the role. But I asked him to do it. I'm a big fan of his.
After a few telephonic conversations, I finally met him in Mumbai. I was quite nervous. Aamir said that he did not like the last 20 minutes of the film, and I agreed with him. I hadn't liked it either but couldn't do much about it during the shoot. Usually, I have about five alternative climaxes when I write a script. I suggested the alternatives to him, he chose one, and we started shooting.
Initially, he was apprehensive about whether he would suit the role. I told him that he would be perfect for the romantic parts, but needed to work on his body for the tough part. What surprised me was that he had started working out even before we met.
