Top Tamil Films, 2008

The year 2008 has not been good for the Tamil film industry. There were highs -- Kamal Haasan's Dasavatharam -- and there were lows -- Rajnikant's Kuselan.

Then, there were surprise hits like Subramainiapuram, Poo, Anjathe and Saroja. We take a look at the best of Tamil cinema, 2008.

Subramaniapuram
Director: Sashi Kumar
Cast: Jai, Sashi Kumar, Swati

Like Ameer's Paruthiveeran, Subramaniapuram is a landmark Tamil film. A former assistant of Ameer and Bala, Sashi Kumar lived up to high expectations and made the film a must-watch.

A film set in the Madurai depicting the 1980s and starring newcomers, Sashi Kumar could not get any producers. So he decided to produce the film himself, and expected huge losses. Fortunately, the film turned out to be the surprise hit of 2008.

The director spent a lot of time researching the subject to give the film an authentic look, making it the film's biggest asset. The only deterrent for the weak-hearted was the violence.
