Sometimes superhits suck.
Just because a good film doesn't necessarily have to translate into a box office smash, similarly a tremendous success doesn't have to have anything to do with the film being actually, um, good.
In this list, I've tried to look not just at bad movies which have gone on to do well, but at the worst films from among the biggest hits in the history of Hindi cinema.
Several films came close: Roti Kapada Aur Makaan, Border, Partner, Haathi Mera Saathi, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Bhool Bhulaiyya, Coolie, Welcome... But the 10 we picked are the absolute bottom of the barrel.
Most of these films feature massive superstars, some have songs and scenes we remember, and a few we're plain indulgent towards... But each and every one of them is embarrassingly horrid when viewed in the calm light of today. And hey, if we don't begrudge them their billions, they shouldn't have a problem with us calling spades by name, right?
Here, then, are 10 blockbusters that make you realise just how frighteningly flawed democracy can be:
Gadar
We have always had massively successful blockbusters painting a dangerously jingoistic picture of our nation and its neighbours, but this was one of the biggest successes in the history of our industry -- and its reckless insanity needs to be estimated in a rightfully overblown context.
Sunny Deol starred as Superman -- benchpressing bad guys, tossing them over his shoulder like an errant cricket ball, and playing the sarangi with one hand -- while the Pakistanis were the evil empire. It was atrocious enough, and just when you thought it couldn't get more painful: enter Amisha Patel.
