Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan's antics in Kal Ho Naa Ho may have made Kantabai miserable but Karan Johar seems to want more of it.
His new film, Dostana, will now see Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham act gay.
Directed by 32-year-old Tarun Mansukhani, Dostana is being produced by Karan, as a tribute to his late father, Yash Johar. The film also stars Priyanka Chopra.
Nithya Ramani chats with Tarun, and gives us a first look into the film.
How did you land a film with Karan Johar?
My sister and Karan are school friends. When Karan decided to start his film career, he asked my sister if I would be interested. In those days, Karan and I were assisting Anand Mahendru in Dekh Bhai Dekh. I wanted to learn filmmaking from FTII [Film and Television Institute of India] so I was not too keen on joining Karan. But we met, and he suggested that I give the exams, see how I fare and then make a decision. When I went to give my exam, I did not know anything. I knew I would not get in. So I decided to join Karan immediately. I have assisted him in all his films.
During Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, I gave him the script of Dostana. He asked me to improve on it.
What is Dostana about?
It is about three friends -- Abhishek Bahchcan, John Abraham and Priyanka Chopra. Abhishek plays a male nurse at a hospital in Miami, John is a photographer, who is an illegal immigrant in Miami and Priyanka works with the Verve magazine.
The story is about how the three strangers come together, live together in an apartment and have their moments of happiness and sorrow.
Abhishek, John act gay in Dostana. I have added the gay concept, as I think it is an issue that needs to be touched upon.
How did you decide on your cast?
I knew all of them. I share a good rapport with them. We're friends, who have worked together, fought, had our share of funů
How did John and Abhishek react on knowing they had to act gay?
They are cool, open-minded people. When I narrated the story to John, he laughed and said, 'should I do this with Abhishek?' and that is all. Neither of them had any qualms.
The film takes its title from the Amitabh Bachchan-Shatrugan Sinha starrer, produced by Yash Johar. Any similarities?
No. I think the promos make that clear. We had the name with us and since it suited the script, we decided to name it Dostana.
