'This is the most difficult character Kajol has ever played'

So how much have you changed since your video film days?

With age, you understand things better. At that time, I was good at technology, and I would make trolleys and cranes with my own hands. I would take such difficult shots that people would be shocked and amazed as to how I managed them.

But today, while making U Me Aur Hum, my entire concentration was on storytelling and what techniques I should use with specific scenes. Now, technology has become secondary and storytelling is the primary focus.

Were you inspired by any director?

No. Every director has his own style. Filmmaking is about storytelling and everyone has a different style. I have tried to bring on screen whatever was on paper. When you convert what's on paper to screen, there is always some loss because it's very difficult to film exactly what's on your mind. But I think we're very close to the script.

What do you feel about directing Kajol?

She is a great actress. This is the most difficult character she has ever played, and she's done it beautifully.

Was she your first choice?

She didn't give me a choice. When I got this idea, and narrated it to her, she told me that she wanted to do it. So she was a part of the film before I even planned it. But even otherwise, Kajol would be every director's first choice.

Apart from acting, Kajol handled the film's production too.
