Forget the one-trick ponies, the only directors worth their salt are those with an established filmography.
One directorial success could be a fluke, two could be a combination of luck and ingenuity, but a cushy track record of hits and rave reviews, ah, that's what makes a great filmmaker.
Of course, even the top directors have their pitfalls. Here is a look at some of the most proven filmmakers, and their weakest moments.
Yash Chopra's Parampara
The legendary director has been behind many a memorable film, always staying ahead of the times. From Waqt to Daag, from Deewar to Silsila, Yashji has churned out instant classics with unparallelled consistency.
1992's Parampara, however, is a darned mess, a tragically outdated multistarrer -- Aamir and Saif Ali Khan, Sunil Dutt, Vinod Khanna, Raveena Tandon, Neelam were all part of the mix -- that dealt with family feuds and bizarrely 1950s-style village traditions. Add to that women in 1980s fashion, and this one was a disaster.
