How different is Dhamaal from the other comic characters you've essayed so far?
Strangely, in films I've barely done comic roles. My very first 'comic comic' role in the true sense of the word was Salaam Namaste. Before that, I've done like about 20 films like 100 Days, Jawani Zindabad, Teesra Kaun, Oh Darling Yeh Hai India, Lashkar and Fire.
I've hardly done comedy in films. I was either dancing or playing one of the leads. Then I realised I wasn't getting the kind of work that excited me so I ventured into television. I used it as a platform and did what I wanted to. I bought a new flavour to TV and that's how people developed this image of me.
Incidentally, I've done Boom which was kind of whacky, then Jajantaram Mamantaram for which children still remember me as Aditya. More recently, I played a stylish villain in Victoria No 203.
Five wacky guys on sets... What sort of real dhamaal did you'll indulge in?
Actually, we all had solo portions and we only teamed up for a few scenes. But whenever we did, it was great camaraderie on sets. I can't recollect incidents as such but it was a fun experience.
Once, we gobbled up pizzas which were required for a sequence. We had to wait for about 40 minutes until new pizzas were called for, for executing the scene.
Then Ritesh's 5-star van with his 42-inch plasma TV was quite fascinating. The van accompanied him everywhere he went.
Tell us about your association with Sanjay Dutt.
Sanju was hassled because of his impending court verdict. It was, understandably, at the back of his mind. He would mingle around but he largely kept to himself. We didn't want to disturb him either.
I have worked with him in Jeena Marna Tere Sang and I've known him for a long time now. He was stressed but he never cold shouldered anyone. He is a caring guy and he respected everyone around.
What did you think of the verdict?
There are a lot of people who don't deserve to be leaders of this country. There are criminals in the parliament and a Salman Khan is picked up for killing a black buck. It is wrong. I am not defending anyone but then justice has to be across the board. The law should be applicable to all.
I would've applauded this very law had it been fair and unvarying. What happened to the riots? What happened to Sri Krishna Commission? It is convenient to appease a certain section.
Unfortunately, the whole system is screwed up. There are murderers and people who have incited violence which is a far more heinous crime in my opinion. It's a sad state of affairs.
