'It gives me a kick when I see people dancing the night away to this number'

Ban Than Chali from Kurukshetra

A Himachal folk group inspired me for this one. Their style of singing was so pure and pristine that it inspired me to come up with something as sensational. I have written the song and just used that one line Ban Than Chali...

Till today the song is a hot favourite in marriages, parties and discotheques. The minute you play the song, people are driven into a frenzy of sorts. It is a foot tapping number to say the least and instantly enlivens the atmosphere. It gives me a kick when I see people dancing the night away to this number.

I remember director Mahesh Manjrekar called me to his vanity van and asked me to try on some clothes. It befuddled me because I didn't have the faintest idea that they wanted me to perform for the first time. I didn't understand until a make up artiste walked up to me.

I was so anxious that I just fled from the scene but they somehow traced me. I was adamant and told Sarojji (choreographer Saroj Khan) that I won't be dancing. But she shot back saying 'aaj tu mere daant key neeche aaya hai, mein tuje nachva kar rahungi' and somehow convinced me to dance.
