His name is Sanjaya Malakar and he can't sing.
The American Idol finalist, however, is 'cute.' Kids love Sanjaya, the bashful 17-year-old giggling as he confesses to the world his ability to hula. Teenage girls like the formerly-floppy haired youngster, as do indulgent mothers -- if FOX's indications of voting demographics are anything to go by.
More vitally, Sanjaya is fast-becoming this year's fastest spreading Internet phenomenon. On one hand is the Indian diaspora, with Pick-Sanjaya emails flooding inboxes across America, the NRI crowd thrilled with the prospect of an Indian Idol. On a diametrically opposed hand are sites like VoteForTheWorst.com, exhorting Idol-mockers to keep the most awful singer's hopes alive.
Either way, both factions have cause to be happy. Sanjaya remains in the Top 11, and wasn't even in the bottom three this week.
