Mira Nair, who has repeatedly described The Namesake as her most personal film, wanted to bring it even closer to her heart. So the March 6 premiere of the film in New York turned into a benefit event to aid yoga and a film school.
With yoga enthusiast Donna Karan, the millionaire fashion designer, as her co-host, Nair used the event to raise money for the Iyengar Yoga Institute. Karan and Nair are longtime followers of BKS Iyengar's yoga and meditation school.
The event was also used to benefit Manisha, a film training program founded by Nair for filmmakers in East Africa (where her husband, Columbia University professor Mahmood Mandani's (left) migrant family comes from) and South Asia.
