With the stupendous success of Classmates, Lal Jose is one of the most celebrated directors in Malayalam cinema.
He has handled a variety of themes from hardcore entertainers like Oru Maravathoor Kanavu and Meesa Madhavan to brave experiments like Chanthupottu and Achanurangatha Veedu.
In his latest project, Arabikkadha, he tells the life of Cuba Mukundan, a diehard, uncompromising Leftist. The film may be quite different from the commercial Classmates; in fact, it may be more on the lines of Achanurangatha Veedu. On location near Palakkad, Vijay got the director to talk about his new film. Excerpts:
What is Arabikkadha all about?
Arabikkadha focuses on the life of a communist named Cuba Mukundan. He is someone quite unique, perhaps like the lion-tailed monkey, who belongs to a species that faces the threat of extinction (laughs).
Jokes apart, he may be a bit eccentric, but carries with him some good ideals, which could set an example for the forthcoming generations. But the sad part is that, in a society where we don't even have hope for a better tomorrow, he is a misfit. The so-called supporters of the new world order, who pretend to chant the mantra of development, brand him unpractical. Later, he is forced to leave his motherland for Dubai. Even there, he finds the going tough.
