Like in 2006, this year too it is battle royal between Ajith and Vijay for Pongal; the two most awaited films are Vijay's Pokkiri and Ajith's Aalwar. In 2006, Ajith's Paramasivan directed by P Vasu (after the runaway success of Chandramukhi) was pitted against Vijay's Aathi. That was when Ajith was going through one of the worst phases in his career and Vijay was riding high on the successes of Gilli and Thirupaachi. The result was Ajith had a hit in Paramasivan and Vijay's Aathi was a disaster. The situation is totally different now. Ajith has just about had the biggest hit of his career, Varalaaru.
This is also Asin's Pongal. She is the heroine for both Ajith and Vijay. Mani Ratnam's Guru is also releasing this Pongal, but it has been dubbed into Tamil from Hindi. Here's a look at the Pongal releases:
Pokkiri (Directed by Prabhu Deva)
A remake of the Telugu blockbuster of the same name starring Mahesh Babu and Ileana, the original directed by Puri Jagannath broke all box office records. It is but natural that other languages and other actors got interested in the remake rights, but it was Vijay who got the rights finally. It was another coup of sorts when Prabhu Deva agreed to direct the film, his first in Tamil.
Vijay is considered the best dancer in Tamil and with Prabhu Deva directing the film, people expect vibrant dances from the duo.
Pokkiri is Vijay's next after the Aathi failure exactly a year ago. The stills from the film featuring Vijay and Asin look awesome.
