'Composers who harass singers are nowhere today'

Manish: When did the two of you first meet?

Sonu: Shankar is cool mind stroke person. He has knowledge of music and I am fan of his vocals. The first time I met him was in 1991-92 when he was doing a jingle for Pepsi with Ranjit Barot. He (Barot) was making you sing Yehi hai right choice Baby.

Shankar: How was 2006 for you?

Sonu: The year was good. I did lot of things. I went to the Himalayas and stayed like a beggar for a week.

Shankar: You are very religious and superstitious, isn't it?

Sonu: No. Spiritual is an exaggerated word. I am not superstitious. I believe in mind over matter. I think a lot.

Shankar: Do you believe in spirituality or God?

Sonu: I don't know where I will reach in life. I know I have to take this path but walking on that path is very difficult. I have responsibilities of my family and I feel that I owe them. If I go that way, it is escapist way. But the spiritual way is the right path.

Shankar: Tell us about the Himalayas.

Sonu: I went with my friends and am proud of my stamina. When I started walking, I started gasping and I realised that I have not taken the right step. After an hour, I felt if I give up, what would the others think? I was ashamed to turn back. I reached top of the Dhilta peak before the porters. I was 16,000 feet above the sea level. We slept in the dark. There were only shrubs. At one time, I heard the sound of some animals. I was not sure which animal... tiger, deer, snow leopard or a jackal. I kept a knife and spray in my hand for 30 minutes. After waiting for that animal, I realised that I felt the animal didn't know I am a Sonu Nigam but his food. I realised that I was a piece of meat for him. It was a very important lesson of life.
