Being Cyrus
Maybe this isn't really a Bollywood film. But it has Bollywood actors, and so features on my list.
Debutant director Homi Adajania gets a lot of things right. Being Cyrus not only has good dialogues and a unique story, it manages to have surprising twists and strong character development. There are some fine performances by Saif Ali Khan, Boman Irani, Simone Singh, Naseeruddin Shah and Dimple Kapadia.
In an era of Emraan Hashmi and Himesh Reshammiya, Being Cyrus gets props for being there in the first place. Who would have thought that a film set in the Parsi community in Mumbai would make for perfect film noir atmosphere?
This is definitely one of the most original Hindi films in a while.
