The rare, first movies of Bollywood's best

After a gap of seven long years, director Vidhu Vinod Chopra is back with his magnus opus Eklavya starring Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Vidya Balan, Boman Irani, Jackie Shroff, Jimmy Shergill, Raima Sen and Sharmila Tagore.

For the director, the journey into direction began with his first diploma film Murder at Monkey Hill in 1976. This is still considered a work of art, and is studied by students at the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune as a part of their course.

This film along with four others have been compiled in a DVD format titled Master Strokes, a collection of the best first films, by curator and FTII director Tripurari Sharan.

A week before Eklavya hits the screens, let us have a look at Chopra's first work, plus the first works of brilliant other film personalities like Jaya Bhaduri, Smita Patil, Girish Kasaravalli and Kundan Shah.
