2007: An exciting year for Tamil cinema

2007 has been a fruitful year for Tamil cinema which also saw the biggest blockbuster of them all, Sivaji: The Boss starring Rajnikanth.

The year also saw many new filmmakers entering the scene and making experiments. What was heartening is that these experiments worked at the box office too. Here are the noteworthy ones:

Film: Periyar
Director: Gnana Rajasekharan
Cast: Satyaraj, Khushboo, Jyothirmayi

There is no filmmaker like Gnana Rajasekharan in Tamil cinema. This IAS officer working currently as the director of the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development had won the Indira Gandhi National award for Best First Film for Moha Mullu. His second film Oru Kan Oru Parvai was shown at the IFFI Indian Panorama in 1998.

Periyar is a biopic that worked magnificently. The filmmaker is an experienced hand at making biopics. His last film Bharati was on the famous Tamil poet Subramanya Bharati.

Periyar, as the name suggests, is the story of Periyar E V Ramaswamy Naicker, the social reformer and rationalist from Tamil Nadu.

One of the major highlights of the film is the scintillating performance by Satyaraj as Periyar.

Periyar was selected for the Indian Panorama at the IFFI, Goa this year. Without any doubt, the best film of 2007.
