They're often more entertaining than the romantic leads.
Some stars get along so well together that their camaraderie makes the film work. The film might not be a male-bonding exercise, but the men play off each other sharply and naturally, and some of them develop long-standing on-screen relationships.
In no particular order, here are some great duos that come to mind:
Paresh Rawal and Akshay Kumar
Akshay Kumar was just another action hero until the mid-90s, after which his khiladi shtick began to get old. In 2000, the formulaic dhishoom-dhishoom guy collided with the brilliant Paresh Rawal in Hera Pheri, and their comic chemistry was spot-on. Kumar and Rawal have since collaborated many a time, and even if the films and directors have left something to be desired, the two have definitely ensured sniggers, if not full-blooded guffaws.
