The film has a very distinctive look, transitioning from the 50s to the 60s. What was your attempt here?
One day before the film, I shot a scene. I graded the same sequence in 3 different ways -- the look for the 50s, the late 50s and the 60s. I showed Sudhir these shots as a reference for what I had in mind regarding the film, and from that point on, we were both absolutely in sync.
So there were no specific films you tried to emulate?
I'd have loved to. It's the kind of film I would have liked to do a lot of research on. Even Sudhir asked me to contact Ashok Mehta, as a senior cameraperson, who could give me some advice. But where did I have the time? I'd rather take the camera and organise the stock.
