Meera Jasmine, the national award winning actress is the most sought after artist in the southern film industry whenever there is a role that needs mature acting.
Her film Ore Kadal, directed by Shyamaprasad and released for Onam on August 26, is based on Sunil Gangopadhyay's novel Hirak Deepthi, which is about a globe-trotting economist, Dr Nathan, a middle class couple and the economist's socialite friend.
Problems arise when Dr Nathan gets into a relationship with Deepthi, the housewife. The film is about the emotional conflicts that all the characters undergo.
Meera rarely speaks to the media and this exclusive interview to rediff.com is one such rare instance. Read on as she speaks frankly about her role in Ore Kadal, how she prepared for it and what makes her happy.
When I interviewed Shyamaprasad, he said the role of Deepthi is one of the most difficult to portray. Did you find this role very challenging?
The first time when I heard the story, the thought that came to my mind was: will this happen in real life? I was also not sure whether this character would be accepted by the people.
I also felt she was far removed from myself. So, I had to convince myself first before I started performing as Deepthi, and I had to try really hard to do that. That way, it was challenging.
