CID (1956)
Crime became second nature. The 50s saw a spate of slick, urban crime thrillers in Bollywood. Films like Sangram and Baazi, Guru Dutt's debut as director, followed strongly in film noir traditions. CID, produced by Dutt and directed by his assistant Raj Khosla, emerged the most polished of the genre.
With VK Murthy behind the camera, Mumbai's shadowy aspects were superbly highlighted. Dev Anand, then used to playing the rakish rogue, played a compelling undercover cop even as Waheeda Rehman made a sensational Bollywood debut as vamp. OP Nayyar's incredible songs live on timelessly, and the film's background score is one of exemplary brilliance.
