Brilliance and beauty at Cannes
Texan director and festival favourite Richard Linklater (left) has two films in contention this year.
Fast Food Nation, based on the book by Eric Schlosser, is a critique of the health risks posed to America by junk food, and stars Catalina Sandino Moreno, Greg Kinnear, Linklater-staple Ethan Hawke and Avril Lavigne, among others.
The other film, however, has the potential to be one of the year's most stylish. A Scanner Darkly, based on Philip K Dick's novel, was filmed digitally and then rotoscoped -- literally painted over frame by frame. The painstaking process makes for an extremely trippy movie, and it stars Keanu Reeves (right), Winona Ryder, Robert Downey Jr and Woody Harrelson. Can't wait.
