The Bible: Still inspiring Hollywood

The Da Vinci Code may well be the biggest hit of 2006. It certainly won't be the first with a Biblical theme, though. Right from the early 1900s, Hollywood has turned, repeatedly, to those ancient tales. From Ben-Hur and Samson and Delilah, to big-budget films on individual events and the all-powerful figure of Jesus - it's all on film. For those who have forgotten, here's a look back.

Samson and Delilah

Clearly a Hollywood favourite, this one has been told a number of times on the big screen, apart from a couple of attempts on TV. Going back as far as 1903, there have been versions released in 1911, 1922, 1927, 1949, 1985 and 1999. And those are only the more well-known adaptations!

Our pick is the 1949 film directed by Cecil B DeMille, starring Hedy Lamarr as Delilah and Victor Mature as Samson. Interestingly, with a domestic gross of $12 million, this was one of Paramount's biggest hits at the time.
