A Scanner Darkly

Richard Linklater is a God.

Best known for the superbly scripted Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, this astonishingly talented (and completely self-schooled) director has helmed cult films like Dazed And Confused and Slackers.

This one follows in the footsteps of his glorious 2001 film, Waking Life.

Like the first film, A Scanner Darkly (based on sci-fi guru Philip K Dick's novel of the same name), it features actors filmed in real life, then digitally painted over, frame by frame, the end result boasting a mesmerising animated effect. There is no consistency in light and lines, and the form is as fluid as the subject. Amazing stuff.

Based on Dick's personal experiences with drugs, this film starring Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder has to be one of the most unpredictable of the season.
