Cutting-edge cinema, 2006

Every now and then, a film comes along that changes the way current cinema is made and consumed.

While it's impossible to identify what will be groundbreaking -- none of us could completely predict the impact of The Matrix or Sin City -- here's a look at the potentially radical films coming up this year:

V For Vendetta

Based on comic genius Alan Moore's much-acclaimed graphic novel of the same name, the film is set in a parallel universe centred around a dystopian London. V (Hugo Weaving) is a freedom fighter taking on a totalitarian regime. The film, releasing on Friday, is all set to be an eye-opener.

It may be directed by James McTeigue, but it is produced by brothers Andy and Larry Wachowski, who had earlier ripped off The Matrix from another comic great, Grant Morrison. We all remember how that turned out. But, then again, they also made those awful sequels. Ah well, at least we get a bald Natalie Portman in a film that could be really interesting.
