Why Bollywood's having a smashing year

Rang De Basanti

Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's movie was a litmus test for Aamir Khan, with the actor's Mangal Pandey having left the box office and the viewers cold last year. It was also the first film after Lagaan in which Aamir was back to his conventional look.

But Rang De Basanti -- about a group of young wastrels discovering a purpose in life and rediscovering India's struggle for freedom, thanks to a British documentary filmmaker -- struck a chord with the audiences. It became a huge hit, and collected more than Rs 50 crore (Rs 500 million) at the box office.
