Why Bollywood's having a smashing year
The Hindi film industry is having a great 2006.
Already this year, several movies have become blockbusters, and big buzz films, including Shah Rukh Khan starrers Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna and Don, are scheduled to hit theatres later in the year.
Here's a quick look at five films that have raised the bar for the industry -- and made a lot of money as well -- this year.
Krrish
It was one of the most awaited films of the year. It was Hrithik Roshan's comeback film after Farhan Akhtar's Lakshya two years ago, and there were a lot of expectations from Hrithik.
People knew that spectacular stunts were in the offing, and Hrithik's miraculous escape while filming a daredevil stunt made headlines.
"I want to prove the world that we are no less than Hollywood." director Rakesh Roshan told rediff.com before the release of the film.
Thanks to superb marketing -- the promos highlighted the special effects -- the film caught on and children found a new superhero in Hrithik Roshan.
Krrish saw a phenomenal 100 per cent opening at the box office and is still going strong in most of the centres. Trade pundits are confident the film will reach a figure of Rs 100 crore -- that's a whopping Rs 1 billion -- in the near future and become the biggest hit of the year so far.
