Critics pour water on Shyamalan's Lady

July 24, 2006
M Night Shyamalan's latest, Lady In The Water, opened in most of the world on July 21, a week before it opens in India this Friday.

And seven days is enough for critics to bury a film. It could be a result of Shyamalan's fall-out with Hollywood heavyweight Disney, or maybe his film is indeed awful. We can soon make up our own minds, but before that, here's what the most prominent reviews said:

Michael Atkinson, The Village Voice

'Nothing will prepare you -- not his previous films, not any reviews you may read, not even a lifetime spent watching Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! cartoons -- for the rampant foolishness of Lady In The Water.'

'It's as if on some semiconscious level, Shyamalan, who I do not doubt is a serious and self-serious pop-creative original, is calling his own success into question and daring his audience to gulp down larger and spikier clusters of manure, just to see if they will. Or he's lost his mind.'
