Why we need Omkara

July 18, 2006
We are roughly ten days away from the theatrical release of Vishal Bhardwaj's take on Shakespeare's Othello, and I just can't wait.

Bollywood is so used to mediocre cinema that when anything with even half a brain comes along, the applause is deafening. The audience is constantly taken for a fool, but when ridiculous farce merrily tots up billions, who can blame the filmmakers for not really trying?

And then there's Vishal Bhardwaj, quite the rarity. Roughly 10 years ago, in the midst of the generic filmi cacophony suddenly emerged an extraordinary music director. Today, he is also one of our most acclaimed filmmakers, with a distinctive sensitivity all his own.

So here is some unashamed craving, as I share with you my rare, ridiculous optimism regarding an upcoming film.
