'It is a dream to have a producer like Shankar'

One of the year's most eagerly awaited films, Veyil is produced by director Shankar and directed by Vasantha Balan. The last two films produced by Shankar -- Kadhal and Imsai Arasan 23rd Pulikesi -- were huge hits. Both films were critically appreciated as well, raising expecations for the upcoming film Once again, the film stars Bharath and Bhavana.

Shobha Warrier caught up with Vasantha Balan and found out about the film. Excerpts:

How did you get the chance to direct a film for Shankar?

I have been working as an assistant to Shankar sir. I had this story idea with me for quite some time. When Kadhal got released and became a huge success, I wrote the script of Veyil. I felt it was an experimental film like Kadhal. Then, I asked Shankar sir for an appointment to narrate the story. He was busy shooting Anniyan then. When he became free, he told me, 'I am only interested in listening to the story if it is different. I have no intention to produce a typical commercial film. If your story is very commercial, don't tell me. I am not interested.' I told him my story was not ordinary. He then asked me to tell him the story the very next day.

After listening to the story, he said 'Very good story,' and went home. I was worried. He didn't tell me anything about producing the film. I became very tense. I could not resist myself from going to his place the very next day. I asked him, 'sir, you only said, very good story. Won't you make it?' He smiled and said, 'Didn't I tell you? Of course, I am producing the film.'
