Ramu To The Future
Some directors like to keep their hands full. Ram Gopal Varma is a prime example, a man who wastes no time constantly going from high-profile project to esoteric film.
This Friday sees Darna Zaroori Hai, a Portmanteau film where he is one among seven directors, and one that stars almost all of Bollywood -- Amitabh Bachchan, Mallika Sherawat, Anil Kapoor, and Bipasha Basu are just a few of the names involved.
Raja Sen dropped into the dark Factory offices to catch up with RGV, and talk DZH, Nishabd, and a 'Time Machine' project with Shah Rukh Khan. Here are some excerpts:
You have half the industry in your new film. How do you do that?
I think it's just that they were excited with the concept. You won't get a chance to perform in a genre like this, ordinarily. It's for the love of making a different film, which is why I think everyone is a part of the film.
We know your segment in the film stars Amitji and Riteish (Deshmukh). What else can you tell us about Darna?
The whole concept is that stories have a natural length of interest. A story can work in 15 minutes and 20 minutes, but if you stretch it to two hours to make a feature film, it loses its zing. At the same time, because of the time restriction, you can't experience a movie that would be very interesting in a shorter duration. So, to overcome that limitation, I created this concept of Darna..., just to link them through some kind of main story. And to tell them something very different and bizarre. The least it would achieve is that nobody would have ever experienced stories like these.
