Rajkumar's first film as hero, Bedara Kannappa, was produced by AVM Productions and directed by H L N Simha. When the late A V Meiyappan Chettiyar saw Dr Rajkumar as Mutturaj before he was selected for the film, he had apprehensions about whether the young actor would justify the selection.

But Rajkumar became a star with his first film. 25 years later, AV Meiyappan sold his Bangalore bungalow in Sadashivanagar to Rajkumar, which remained his home until death.
