Leela Chitnis

With this 1929 ad, Leela Chitnis became the first Indian actress to appear in any advertisement. Lux -- the name coined from the word Luxury -- was then selling at two annas (about 15 paise) a bar.

A fine actress, Leela is most remembered for landmark films like Kangan, Azaad and Jhoola, where she excelled as a heroine long before her memorable maternal roles in films like Shaheed, Awara, and Guide.
