The premiere was scheduled for 4 pm, appropriate for a screening that would draw a lot of parents and children. But fans -- mostly screaming teenage girls, several with scarves and hats from the Hogwarts' winter uniform -- had arrived several hours earlier. Facing the Ziegfeld Theatre and lined up on the sidewalk along the Hilton New York hotel side of 54th Street, they carried copies of Rowlings' fourth book, hoping for autographs.

As the young stars arrived, security personnel escorted them to the fans, adding to the screaming and increasing decibel levels in the street. Jamie Waylett, 16, (Vincent Crabbe) was the first to head to the fans, followed closely by the lovely Katie Leung, 18, (Cho Chang) and Matthew Lewis, 15 (Neville Longbottom). But the loudest cheers were heard when Radcliffe, Grint and Watson moved towards the fans.
