"Music trends have changed over the last eight months. I was the one who gave a very Indian Tere Naam, which became the biggest selling album of the last ten years. The promos are still on air. But now, I feel that kind of music doesn't work anymore. I think the trend was set from Just Chill, which was absolutely for an urban audience or youngsters.
Because Just Chill became such a big hit, I had to maintain the standard and needed something different. Even the voice had to be fresh, which is why I sang myself. It had rocking beats but, at the same time, a very Sufi-like melody. The orchestration was very contemporary too. If I were to find a reason for these hits, I think it has everything to do with the freshness of the songs.
The director (Aaditya Datt) told me the title and described the preceding scene. I already had a tune, with different lyrics. I fitted in the words 'aashiq banaya' later.
I will sing more songs, but only in selected films like the ones I am now doing -- China Town with Subhash Ghai and Abbas Mastaan, and Aksar, starring Emraan Hashmi. I will also be cutting my own album soon."
