Imagine a Bollywood film without naach-gaana. The thought could give a whole lot of teenagers sleepless nights, considering a number of films run on the basis of their soundtracks alone. A recent music survey has yielded the Top Five Songs from Diwali last year to now. Rediff.com spoke to the music directors responsible for these chart-toppers:
1. Kajra Re, from Bunty Aur Babli
Music Director: Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy
Singers: Alisha Chinai, Shankar Mahadevan and Javed Ali
In Ehsaan's words:
"Aditya Chopra and Shaad Ali briefed us. They wanted a song to introduce the two Bachchans together. At first, they wanted a scene to bring them together, but then realized a song would look better. It was to be a mujra or qawwali kind of track.
We decided on Gulzarsaab, who penned the song. It's like a modern day qawwali, to which Gulzarsaab added some soul. He described the lyrics as words often found on the backs of trucks.
We composed this quickly -- just half a day to compose, with dubbing and other things taking little time too. We decided on Alisha Chinai because her anglicised voice would give us a different sound.
When we did the song, we surveyed the album with people working at Yash Raj. Everyone thought it just an okay song. Even the reviews were not so good. But we knew it would click. Still, you can never predict what a big hit will be. It felt really good when the song took off. It still feels fantastic.
