The story of Daivanamaithil revolves around an educated young woman, Sameera, who marries Anwar. Anwar goes to North India for higher studies. He comes back transformed, as an extremist ready to kill in the name of God.

Sameera cannot accept the change in him and does not believe in the his newfound 'ideology.' She tries to convince him but he remains adamant. She gets him arrested.

"They (fundamentalists) screamed that I was trying to malign my religion," says Showkath. "They said I aimed at international awards by criticising my own religion. I am not criticising my religion. I am criticising the narrow-minded elements in the religion."
