Abhijeet Sawant, who won Sony Television's most successful talent hunt Indian Idol on Saturday, is a textbook success story.

Seven months of hard work and tough competition against hundreds of contestants finally saw Abhijeet being crowned the best.

Surrounded by slums, Abhijeet is a resident of the Sahu Nagar area in Dharavi, northcentral Mumbai. Residents of his locality are delighted and proud with the result. Abhijeet has brought his neighbourhood well into the limelight.

Abhijeet has always been Sahu Nagar's favourite singer, and most festive occasions would see the boy perform on stage.

The Sahu Nagar Ganesh Utsav Mandal, for whom Abhijeet sang most of his songs, put up large Abhijeet cut-outs and also arranged a screening of the final Indian Idol show on Saturday, March 5, in the open space in front of his building. Hundreds of people watched the show, thrilled with his achievement.
