And then came Black.
An 'unconventional' rip-off -- a cross between Arthur Penn's masterful The Miracle Worker and Krzysztof Kieslowski's Three Colours: Blue, would you believe? -- Black was the year's most bewildering film. Raising more questions than answers, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's fantastically shot, über-pretentious mega-project became a hard-to-comprehend masterstroke.
With critics across the country suffering from the 'emperor's new clothes' syndrome -- Who dares call the film bad? Well, it's weirdly lit, so that must be good, right? -- the film garnered extraordinary reviews and an unparalleled pseudo fan-following. So what if it mixed up Alzheimer's and Parkinson's?

Rani Mukerji was universally hailed for her performance (minus the Little Tramp gait, that is), and this was the first of the films this year authoritatively heralding her position as the reigning queen of the industry. Admittedly, it was a role few actresses would have dared to tackle -- before this, that is, Kareena Kapoor has already signed up to play a similar character in a forthcoming Priyadarshan film -- and she shone magnificently in some scenes. A supporting actress in Veer-Zaara, Rani now seems to have no competition.
Again, the film did well, but only in cities, and, specifically, multiplexes.
