For Indian jazz trippers let down by Jazz Yatra 2004 in Mumbai not boasting of any big names, the blue note is over.
Playing in Mumbai on Sunday, January 16, at the Gateway of India, are four names right from the top shelf of modern jazz:
Ravi is the son of John Coltrane, arguably the greatest tenor saxophone player ever, and keyboardist Alice Coltrane, a formidable jazz lady herself.
And you have to give it to a guy who has the guts to brave that kind of legacy and take up his father's instrument.
Ravi has flowered into his own and played with greats driving his father's sound, such as drummer Elvin Jones. Critics have praised him, despite the inevitable comparison with his dad, certainly one of the most influential musicians ever.
What to expect: Jazz, pure and old school.
