It is not difficult to locate Rahul Vaidya's home in Lokhandwalla Complex, northwest Mumbai. Children chant Rahul bhaiya as they escort you to his flat on the fourth floor.

Rahul welcomes you with a handsome smile. There is no sorrow in those twinkling eyes.

For those who don't know, Rahul made it to the last three on the popular reality show, Indian Idol. Unfortunately, he was voted out, to make way for Abhijeet Sawant and Amit Sana.

On February 24, Contributing Special Correspondent A Ganesh Nadar watched the Indian Idol final with Rahul and his family.

At 9:30 pm, just before the show is about to start, Rahul settles down on the floor while his parents, Rustom and Geeta, sit on a sofa behind him. His sister Shruti stays close to the television set. Her job is to lower the volume whenever the commercials begin.
