Less than a week before the Oscars, Hollywood is in a state of tizzy -- with all sorts of bets on, and film gurus expressing their opinions.
The biggest debate right now is on the two top categories -- Best Picture and Best Director. Will movie giant Martin Scorsese finally win his best director Oscar, or will his huge Aviator be overshadowed by the smaller (at least by Hollywood standards) human drama -- Clint Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby?
I think the debate should also be about why my two favorite films of 2004 (both were also well reviewed and box-office successes) -- Walter Salles' The Motorcycle Diaries and Zhang Yimou's House of Flying Daggers -- were nearly ignored by the Academy of Motion Science Pictures.
If one claims these films are too foreign, then what when the Academy bestowed accolades on films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Life Is Beautiful, or on filmmaker Pedro Almodovar?
So here are my predictions for this Sunday's Oscar race.
