Cinematographer Ravi K Chandran has such films like Virasat, Koi... Mil Gaya, Dil Chahta Hai and Yuva to his credit. But it's his most recent film, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Black, that Chandran considers one of his most important works in his career.

Black stars Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerji. Chandran chats with Contributing Special Correspondent Shobha Warrier about his experiences on the film.

I was actually signed to do Bajirao Mastani with Sanjay Leela Bansali. But when it got delayed, Sanjay asked me if I would be interested in shooting snow.

Since I could not work in high altitudes, I said I wouldn't mind if it was not at a very high place. He said he was planning to shoot the film in Shimla. So I was on.

Sanjay, who uses colours liberally in his films, was planning to do a film where the dominant colour would be black, and it fascinated me.

He then gave me the script. It was fabulous. There were only two main characters in the film -- a deaf, dumb and blind girl and her teacher. There were no songs in the film, no romantic elements, and no comedy track. I would say Black is a Malayalam film on a Sanjay Leela Bansali canvas.
