John Lennon was always one for a bit of a laugh. He was often responsible for a lot of them too. There's that famous moment in 1963, when the fresh young Beatles were invited to the Royal Variety Performance before members of the British royal family. 'Will the people in the cheaper seats clap your hands?' said Lennon, 'and the rest of you, if you'll just rattle your jewellery.'

There were innumerable instances of wit surfacing at times when you least expected it. In 1964, when a reporter asked, 'Why do you think you're so popular all of a sudden?' he replied, 'I don't know, it must be the weather.'

When another asked, 'What have you seen that you like best about our country?' he said, simply, 'You.'
