The British have always been a funny bunch of people. John Lennon and The Beatles, however, still managed to stand out with their own peculiar brand of humour.

While the world celebrates the music of Lennon on his 25th death anniversary, we look at some of his funnier moments...

It was 1965. And The Beatles ruled the world. They had evolved into such a huge British export that they were each awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire.

Then, four years later, one of them, John Lennon, had his chauffeur return his MBE to Buckingham Palace with this letter to Queen Elizabeth: 'I am returning this MBE in protest against Britain's involvement in the Nigeria-Biafra thing, against our support of America in Vietnam, and against Cold Turkey [his latest single] slipping down the charts.

With love, John Lennon.'
