At the launch of the film's music, producer Ram Kumar of Sivaji Films remarked that the story was original, and the film was not a remake.

But those who have seen P Vasu's Kannada film, Aaptha Mitra, say it is a remake of Fazil's Manichitrathazhu made in 1993. Chandramukhi was originally rumoured to be a remake of Aaptha Mithra.
